Weekend Assignment #78: Things to Take
Rita is plodding implacably toward Texas, and folks there in its path are doing what they can to dget out of its way. The evacuation is massive -- more than a million people -- and the logistics of such an undertaking help provide us this week's Weekend Assignment:
Weekend Assignment #78: You are preparing to evacuate your house due to an upcoming threat. You have already packed up all your essential items, people and pets. You have room for three non-essential items. What are they?
Remember, you already have your essentials: food, medicines, water, clothes, and all the people (including the furry ones) who live with you. "Non-essentials" are things you don't need but would like to have, and can include momentos, books, jewelry, objects of sentimental value, and so on and so forth.
Ok, well lets see the pets ARE ESSENTIALS so they don't take up my list! :-)
1. All my photos for my memories & those generations after me. I treasure the photos of the generations before me. They only took a few so now being able to take more I know this will be soooo worth it.
2. My correspondences and significant momentos. I have kept all cards & letters (some emails) I received my whole life. Even invitations to parties or weddings etc. To me it is really a great look into my life for future generations. I may compile them later into a scrapbook or book? We'll see where life takes me & if anyone would be interested. I have kept Newspapers of significant events, magazines etc. I even have some of Princess Diana's wedding in foreign languages. Heck, maybe I can get some money from them & then be ok after the storm! Ha! Oh and my journal books! I have quite a number of them through at least a bit after college. I would want them to add to the photos & letters. Nice to read what I thought then & who was in my life etc. Certainly not big romance novel stuff but some lovely memories still. Oh add in there things like Birth Certificate etc. Then again, if it is lost maybe I can get away with being younger?! ;-)
3. Special items passed on to me. My grandmother's wallet, some jewelry from my Great-Great Aunts, my 1 of a kind gold charm of my name my dad made for me for my birthday, someone had old christmas ornaments passed on, I have those & that I would very much like to try to take. I love those old ones! Probably my Willow Tree Angel collection & some other angels. Things I would want to pass on to my nieces, I wouldn't have much, so those items would mean a great deal to me to give to them.
Well this seems right? Have to look around more?
Extra Credit: Have you ever been evacuated?
Well sorta. When I was in college we had a fire in our dorm the morning of a Monday which was a holiday off & everyone was sleeping in. Luckily, one girl got up early, saw it & pulled the alarm. I woke up coughing to death from smoke! I was hitting my alarm clock too. Our fire alarms just sounded like an alarm clock. Afterwards they made them very obnoxiously loud. I was barely awake to think and I don't think too well in the morning until I'm up for a while! Ha! And I had my own room for 3 of my 4 years so it was up to me to save my...butt! It was February, so it was mighty cold outside & well I certainly needed much more on, so I had to get some clothes & shoes on & then I got out. I didn't take anything but my key! HA! There was just too much smoke in my room to even see anything really. I opened my door & I just saw flames coming out of our trash shoot, which by the way was closed! Amazing! We headed to the guys dorm. I think they must have thought they were dreaming or that "Hell Froze Over", considering many must have heard that said to them quite a bit! HA! They were all loving it & were sooooo sympathetic of course! ;-) We could stay there as long as we liked. Wasn't that soooo nice of them! Ha! Ya, where were they being a hero & getting us out! Ha! I remember my RA totally freaked! She was a basket case! Luckily, there was mostly just smoke damage. It was quite an experience I must say! The following year my best friend moved to another dorm & they had like 3 fires in a few months. Some guy who had royalty in his blood was starting them & his family disowned him I remember when this was all going on. HA!
