Young Inspiring Women!

Do you know who this woman is? No? YOU SHOULD!!!! She is such an INSPIRATION!

Tonight her story was portrayed on Lifetime in "
For One Night". I'm so glad I taped it. I'm going to make sure my nieces watch it.

This is Gerica McCrary and she is a Jr. in college now, but when she was a Sr. in high school she dared to make a difference in a place where change was so incredibly slow to occur. Gerica thought is was very silly (to say the least!) that in the year 2002 her school would still have segragated Proms! I had my students reading the articles when they first came out so I was so thrilled it was made as a movie. I offered it to my students to watch for extra credit.

Gerica had to deal with the "old" (I say that as far as their viewpoint!) parents on the board & PTA, risk losing her Valedictorian status and deal with some classmates who were AFRAID! It wasn't that she didn't have doubts or her own fears at times. She could have taken the easy way out, but she chose not to. That is COURAGE!

Watching this show made me think about how I felt & probably many others did when one is young (HS & College). You have such an amazing feeling of making a difference in the world. You don't see the limits or care about boundaries placed by others. I recognized that feeling again in me & said where have you been lately? :-) Thankfully, I haven't lost it totally but I think it was creeping away a bit. Perhaps it is just because of my recent health issues & I should give myself a break a little. I have a feeling though it is coming back! ;-)

I hope you will all take a look at the links & read more about her & share her story with others! I have a feeling this is not the last inspiring act this woman will do in her life! :-)

Hello~
This young lady is most definitely a hero in my book too. It's a disgusting shame that she had to be a "hero" on a segregated prom. What are these people thinking? The PTA is involved too, is that right? They are suppose to be there for the students and other parents and they support this nonsense. They all should be afraid and ashamed of themselves for these practices. I hope this story gains even more nation attention and thank you very much for posting this on your journal.

Big Hugs,
Gayla

I didn't see the Lifetime show, but I do remember when this was in the news.  I thought it was great and very brave of her.
